Exploring the Mystery: Why Did Jesus Pray If He Was God?

The prayers of Jesus are among the most profound and moving moments in the Gospels. Yet, they also raise an intriguing question: if Jesus is truly God, why did He pray? This question touches the heart of Christian theology, the nature of Christ, and the purpose of prayer itself.

The Two Natures of Christ

The Bible teaches that Jesus is both fully God and fully man—a truth known as the hypostatic union (John 1:14 ASV; Colossians 2:9 ASV). As God the Son, Jesus possesses all the attributes of deity. As a man, He experienced all the realities of human life, including the need for prayer.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth. - John 1:14 ASV
for in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily, - Colossians 2:9 ASV

Prayer as Perfect Communion

As the eternal Son, Jesus enjoyed perfect fellowship with the Father. His earthly prayers reflect this intimate relationship. Jesus prayed not because He lacked knowledge or power, but as an expression of His loving communion with the Father. This is seen in passages like:

And he withdrew himself in the deserts, and prayed. - Luke 5:16 ASV
Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me. And I knew that thou hearest me always... - John 11:41-42 ASV

Even in eternity, the Father, Son, and Spirit exist in perfect relationship. Jesus’ prayers are a glimpse into this divine fellowship.

Jesus as Our Example

In His humanity, Jesus modeled a life of dependence on God. He prayed to demonstrate how believers are to rely on the Father’s will and strength. This is especially clear in the Garden of Gethsemane:

saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. - Luke 22:42 ASV

Jesus’ prayers teach us to submit our desires to God, trust His wisdom, and lean on Him in every circumstance.

Prayer in the Mission of Salvation

Jesus prayed as part of His redemptive mission. He interceded for His followers (John 17:9 ASV), for God’s will to be done, and for strength to complete His work on the cross. His prayers reveal His heart as our Mediator:

I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for those whom thou hast given me; for they are thine. - John 17:9 ASV

The book of Hebrews explains that Jesus continues this role even now:

Wherefore also he is able to save to the uttermost them that draw near unto God through him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. - Hebrews 7:25 ASV

Conclusion: The Wonder of Christ’s Prayers

Jesus prayed because He was the perfect man, living in total dependence on the Father, and also the perfect Son, revealing the love within the Trinity. His prayers are both a model for us and a window into the mystery of God’s plan of salvation.

Through His prayers, we see His humility, obedience, and love—not only for the Father, but for us as well. As we follow His example, we are invited into the same fellowship with God that Jesus enjoyed.
