Understanding the Context: Numbers 12 and the Roots of Jealousy & Pride

Numbers 12 presents a striking scene where Miriam and Aaron speak against Moses out of jealousy and pride. Their criticism, initially about Moses' Cushite wife, quickly reveals its true nature—questioning Moses’ unique relationship with God:

And they said, Hath Jehovah indeed spoken only with Moses? hath he not spoken also with us? And Jehovah heard it. - Numbers 12:2 ASV

At its core, this passage warns us about the dangers of jealousy (envying another’s role or favor) and pride (exalting ourselves or demanding recognition). God’s response is swift and serious, underscoring how these attitudes disrupt God’s community.

The Dangers of Jealousy and Pride

Scripture repeatedly warns against these sins, showing their destructive power:

  • Jealousy corrupts relationships: It breeds resentment and division.
For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed. - James 3:16 ASV
  • Pride precedes downfall: Pride isolates us from God’s grace.
Pride goeth before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. - Proverbs 16:18 ASV

Guarding Against Jealousy and Pride

How can believers today avoid these dangers? Numbers 12, along with the broader counsel of Scripture, gives us several key strategies.

1. Recognize God’s Sovereign Calling

God chooses whom He will for specific roles and purposes. Moses’ unique relationship with God was not of his own making but God’s choosing:

With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even manifestly, and not in dark speeches... - Numbers 12:8 ASV

Understanding that every believer has a unique calling helps us celebrate others’ gifts rather than envy them.

2. Practice Humility

The antidote to pride is humility. Moses is described as “very meek, above all the men that were upon the face of the earth” (Numbers 12:3 ASV). This humility positioned Moses to receive God’s favor and guidance.

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. - 1 Peter 5:6 ASV

3. Cultivate Gratitude for God’s Grace

Jealousy often stems from forgetting that everything we have is a gift of grace. Paul reminds us:

For who maketh thee to differ? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? but if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory as if thou hadst not received it? - 1 Corinthians 4:7 ASV

4. Encourage and Honor Others

Instead of competing, believers are called to honor one another and rejoice in others’ successes.

in love of the brethren be tenderly affectioned one to another; in honor preferring one another; - Romans 12:10 ASV

5. Seek God’s Correction and Forgiveness

When we recognize jealousy or pride in our hearts, we should confess and seek God’s cleansing. Miriam’s eventual restoration after her discipline shows God’s mercy is available when we repent.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. - 1 John 1:9 ASV

Application: Building Christ-Centered Community

The Church thrives when each member accepts God’s calling, humbly serves, and celebrates the gifts of others. By guarding against jealousy and pride, we reflect Christ’s love and unity to the world.

Let nothing be done through faction or through vainglory, but in lowliness of mind each counting other better than himself... Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 2:3 ASV
