The Healing of the Paralytic: A Picture of Faithful Community
The story of the healing of the paralytic, found in Luke 5:17-26 ASV, is a powerful account that not only demonstrates Christ’s authority to heal and forgive sins, but also beautifully illustrates the importance of community in the life of faith.
Setting the Scene
Jesus is teaching in a crowded house. The place is so full that no one else can get in. Four men arrive, carrying their paralyzed friend, determined to bring him before Jesus. Unable to enter through the door, they climb onto the roof, remove some tiles, and lower the man down into the midst of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop, and let him down through the tiles with his couch into the midst before Jesus. - Luke 5:19 ASV
Faith Is Seen in Community
Notice that Jesus’ response is not only to the faith of the paralytic, but to the faith of his friends as well. The text says:
And seeing their faith, he said, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. - Luke 5:20 ASV
The pronoun "their" suggests that the faith of the group—the community—was instrumental in what happened. Their determination, creativity, and sacrificial love for their friend embody the way believers are called to support one another. This aligns with the New Testament's teaching on community, such as:
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. - Galatians 6:2 ASV
The Community’s Role in Bringing Others to Christ
The paralytic could not reach Jesus on his own. Without the help of his friends, he would have remained on the outskirts, unable to experience healing and forgiveness. This illustrates a key principle: believers are called to bring others to Christ, especially those who are spiritually or physically unable to come on their own.
This echoes the spirit of evangelism and discipleship:
And the Lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and constrain them to come in, that my house may be filled. - Luke 14:23 ASV
Community as a Channel of Compassion and Perseverance
The friends’ actions required compassion, teamwork, and perseverance. They did not give up at the first obstacle. Their unified effort is a model for the church, which is called to work together in love and faith:

The Result: Glory to God Through Community Faith
After the healing and Jesus’ proclamation of forgiveness, the response of those present was amazement and praise:

True community faith not only brings individuals to Christ but also leads an entire community to glorify God.
Christ at the Center
Ultimately, the passage points to Jesus as the source of both physical and spiritual healing. The community’s role is vital, but all glory and power belong to Christ, who alone forgives sins and restores the broken.
