How To Pray When You Are Struggling?
Praying Through Struggles: Finding Hope and Strength in God
Life’s hardships can leave us feeling spiritually dry, emotionally exhausted, or even distant from God. Yet, the Bible assures us that God invites us to bring our struggles to Him in prayer. How do we pray when we find ourselves overwhelmed, discouraged, or at a loss for words? This study explores biblical principles and examples to help guide our prayers in seasons of struggle.
1. Bring Your Honest Feelings to God
God welcomes our honesty. Even when we feel weak or confused, we are encouraged to approach Him openly. The Psalms are filled with raw expressions of distress and hope. David models this transparency:
I am weary with my groaning; Every night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears. - Psalm 6:6 ASV
Jesus Himself, in the Garden of Gethsemane, expressed deep anguish in prayer:
And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; remove this cup from me: howbeit not what I will, but what thou wilt. - Mark 14:36 ASV
God is not surprised by our pain. He desires us to come as we are, trusting in His compassion.
2. Remember God’s Promises
Prayer becomes powerful when rooted in God’s promises. In times of struggle, recalling Scripture stabilizes our hearts and minds. God promises His presence in our darkest moments:
God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. - Psalm 46:1 ASV
Casting all your anxiety upon him, because he careth for you. - 1 Peter 5:7 ASV
Use God’s Word as the foundation of your prayers, reminding yourself—and telling God—what He has promised.
3. Ask the Holy Spirit to Help
When we do not know what to pray, the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf. We are not left to struggle alone, even in our prayers:
And in like manner the Spirit also helpeth our infirmity: for we know not how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. - Romans 8:26 ASV
Trust that even your weakest prayers are heard and perfected by the Spirit.
4. Pray with Confidence in God’s Grace
Because of Jesus, we can come boldly to God, knowing we will receive mercy and grace:
Let us therefore draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace to help us in time of need. - Hebrews 4:16 ASV
Our confidence in prayer is not based on our strength but on Christ’s finished work and God’s faithfulness.
5. Give Thanks, Even in Difficulty
The act of thanksgiving, even when struggling, shifts our focus from our problems to God’s goodness:
In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus to you-ward. - 1 Thessalonians 5:18 ASV
Gratitude is a powerful expression of trust, reminding us of God’s past faithfulness and His present care.
6. Persist in Prayer
Jesus taught about the value of persistent prayer, especially in hard times. Do not lose heart:
And he spake a parable unto them to the end that they ought always to pray, and not to faint; - Luke 18:1 ASV
Even if answers seem delayed, keep seeking God. He is at work, shaping us and our circumstances.
Conclusion: Trust God With Your Struggles
Prayer during times of struggle is not about having the right words, but about turning to the right Person. God is faithful, compassionate, and powerful to help. As you pray through your pain, trust that He hears, He cares, and He will provide grace for every need.
