Understanding Spiritual Dryness

Many believers experience seasons where God feels distant, their prayers seem unanswered, and spiritual practices lose vitality. This is commonly referred to as "spiritual dryness." The Bible acknowledges that even faithful followers can walk through such valleys. The good news is that Scripture provides wisdom and hope for overcoming these challenging times.

Biblical Examples of Spiritual Dryness

Several figures in the Bible faced spiritual dryness. King David frequently expressed feelings of distance from God. For example:

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, So panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: When shall I come and appear before God? - Psalms 42:1-2 ASV

Elijah, after a great victory, felt alone and discouraged (1 Kings 19:4 ASV). Even Jesus experienced a sense of abandonment on the cross:

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? - Matthew 27:46 ASV

Causes of Spiritual Dryness

  • Unconfessed Sin: Sin can disrupt fellowship with God.
If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear: - Psalms 66:18 ASV
  • Neglect of Spiritual Disciplines: Failing to spend time in God's Word and prayer can lead to dryness.
  • Physical or Emotional Fatigue: Sometimes, weariness or stress can affect our spiritual lives.
  • God's Purposeful Testing: God may allow dryness to deepen our faith and dependence on Him.
And thou shalt remember all the way which Jehovah thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble thee, to prove thee, to know what was in thy heart... - Deuteronomy 8:2 ASV

How to Overcome Spiritual Dryness

  1. Return to God's Word

Scripture is living and active, able to revive the soul. Even when it feels dry, persevere in reading and meditating on God’s Word.

The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring the soul: The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple. - Psalms 19:7 ASV
  2. Be Honest with God in Prayer

Express your feelings to God. The Psalms are filled with honest prayers, showing it’s acceptable to pour out your soul before Him.

I poured out my complaint before him; I showed before him my trouble. - Psalms 142:2 ASV
  3. Confess and Repent of Sin

Ask God to reveal any hidden sin and confess it. God promises to forgive and restore fellowship.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. - 1 John 1:9 ASV
  4. Rely on the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is our helper and comforter. Ask Him to renew your heart and empower your walk.

And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit. - Ephesians 5:18 ASV
  5. Engage in Christian Community

Share your struggles with other believers. Fellowship and mutual encouragement are vital.

And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works; not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another... - Hebrews 10:24-25 ASV

God’s Promise: He Will Restore

God promises to restore and refresh His people. Spiritual dryness is not permanent for the believer. Hold on to hope and trust His faithfulness.

For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and streams upon the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring. - Isaiah 44:3 ASV
