Understanding the Deity of Jesus: A Bible Study

The question of Jesus’ divinity is central to Christian faith. To know whether Jesus is truly God, we must look deeply at the testimony of Scripture. The Bible presents a consistent and compelling case for the deity of Christ, revealing Him not just as a great teacher or prophet, but as God incarnate. Let’s explore key passages and theological insights that help us answer this vital question.

1. Jesus Identifies Himself with God

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus makes statements and claims that equate Himself with God. These are not just subtle hints, but clear affirmations recognized by His contemporaries as claims to divinity.

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am. - John 8:58 ASV

Here, Jesus uses the divine name "I am" (echoing God’s self-revelation in Exodus 3:14, Exodus 3:14 ASV), clearly identifying Himself with Yahweh, the God of Israel. The Jewish leaders understood this as a claim to deity, which is why they picked up stones to stone Him (John 8:59 ASV).

2. The Apostolic Testimony: Jesus Is Worshiped and Called God

The New Testament writers do not hesitate to call Jesus God and worship Him. Worship is reserved for God alone in Scripture, yet Jesus receives it repeatedly.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. - John 1:1 ASV
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. - John 20:28 ASV

Paul also affirms Jesus’ divinity:

who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. - Romans 9:5 ASV

These confessions are significant, especially coming from devout Jews who believed in one God and would not have used such language lightly.

3. Jesus Performs Works Only God Can Do

Jesus forgives sins (Mark 2:5 ASV), raises the dead (John 11:43 ASV), and exercises authority over nature and demons. Only God can forgive sins, and Jesus’ actions prompt His audience to recognize His divine authority.

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins… - Mark 2:10 ASV

4. Jesus’ Divine Attributes

The New Testament attributes to Jesus qualities that belong to God alone: omnipotence (Matthew 28:18 ASV), omnipresence (Matthew 28:20 ASV), and eternality (Revelation 22:13 ASV). These are not attributes of a mere man or angel, but of God Himself.

And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth. - Matthew 28:18 ASV
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. - Revelation 22:13 ASV

5. Theological Implications and the Centrality of the Cross

The saving work of Christ depends on His being fully God and fully man. Only God could bear the infinite penalty for sin; only as a man could He die in our place. This is at the heart of the gospel message:

For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily, and in him ye are made full, who is the head of all principality and power. - Colossians 2:9 ASV

Salvation is possible only because Jesus, the God-man, died for our sins and rose again. We are called to respond in faith:

because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. - Romans 10:9 ASV

6. Addressing Alternative Views

Some groups claim Jesus was only a prophet or created being. However, these interpretations do not align with the full testimony of Scripture, which consistently presents Jesus as the eternal Son of God, co-equal and co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit (Matthew 28:19 ASV).

Conclusion

The evidence from both Jesus’ own words and the testimony of His followers makes it clear: Jesus is God. Our faith and salvation rest on this unshakable truth. To know Jesus is God is to know the heart of Christianity and the assurance of eternal life in Him.
